Go Barefoot | Soles4Souls.org

I just heard of this cause called Soles4Souls and it’s absolutely awesome!  Instead of throwing away your gently used shoes and taking up unnecessary landfill space, donate them to Soles4Souls and make a difference in someone else’s life!  What a great thing!  You get rid of unwanted shoes… perhaps to make room for new ones, and people who really need shoes get them! Let’s help eachother out. Celebs like Scarlett Johansson are jumping on board too!  It’s always nice to see people giving when they can.

My Puppy Tucker vs. Cat Nip

Tucker Bean

Tucker Bean

So, I have a super funny story to share with all of you!  My 4 1/2 month old puppy, Tucker Bean (above), just managed to open and empty a 9 Fl. Oz. bottle of Cat Nip!!!  Unsure of how much he ingested, I immediately grabbed the bottle to read the warning label… to my surprise there was none.  So I called the number on the back of the bottle and a kind woman answered.  I told her that I didn’t know how much he might have ingested, but I made him drink a lot of water to hopefully flush it out.  She gently responded by saying not to worry; Cat Nip is actually in the Mint family and it is not toxic or harmful.  The only thing is that he will be hyper for awhile.  When I said thank you and got off of the phone, I thought to myself, “Oh dear, he is already bouncing off the walls and now Cat Nip is added to the mix?!”  Needless to say this makes for an interesting afternoon…

I wanted to share this with you all because even if you think something is non-toxic for your pet or child, call and ask anyway.  It’s ALWAYS better to be safe than sorry!

united states postal service | a pretty sweet deal

I’m sure you’ve seen the commercials and all but I thought I’d still put the word out there that the United States Postal Service (USPS) is offering Flat Rate Shipping boxes in various sizes and prices.  What this means, is that if you can fit it in the box, up to 70 lbs., they will ship it for a flat rate!  I know, it’s amazing!  You can find more info on their site.

Plus, a bonus is that this supports our ecomomy and can only help us pull out of this recession!  Happy Shipping!

a quote for today

I found this quote by Biologist E. O. Wilson in my Green Daily Calendar and thought I would share it with all of you!  Let me know what you think!

“Destroying rain forest for economic gain is like burning a Renaissance painting to cook a meal.”

Put that in your back pocket!!

Keep Your Lawn Happy

Keep your lawn and pocket-book happy by watering it early in the morning, around 5am.  Why, you ask?  Because the lower temperatures at that time gaurantee less evaporation, lower winds mean your grass is less likely to be blown dry, and high humidity and morning dew contribute to whatever’s coming out of your sprinkler or hose.  Early-morning watering also helps prevent lawn diseases, because your lawn will be dry by nighttime. So your lawn gets more water, therefore it is happier and so are you because you have a rockin’ green lawn and spend less money achiving it!

Chopsticks Are Fun But Wasteful

Okay, so chopsticks are super fun to use when dining out at your favorite funky Asian restaurant, right?  Yeah!  But did you know that China produces and discards more than 45 billion pairs of disposable chopsticks EVERY year!!!  This means that 25 million trees are being cut down in the process!  It’s true.  Another 15 billion pairs are exported to Japan, South Korea and other countries, including the United States of America!!!  What can I do to lessen this impact on Mother Nature you ask.  Well, simply invest in a reusable pair like these funky ones above.  You would be amazed at how many fun colors and designs come in reusable form.  Plus, they’re dishwasher-safe.  You can take them along with you while dining out or use them at home.  If you don’t want to take your own along, use a fork, they’re pretty cool utensils too you know.  When carrying out from a restaurant, simply say, “no chopsticks, please.”  It’s really that easy! The fun chopsticks above are from Crate and Barrel!

Or you can check out these awesome Recycled Rice Eco Chopsticks!  Wow!  That’s Green!

DEET | Dangerous for Sure

DEET is best if avoided.  It can melt plastic, so why on Earth would we want to put it on our skin, let alone our children’s skin?!  Herb-based products are more gentle.  Some ingredients might include: eucalyptus, citronella, lavender, and tea tree oil.  You can even make your own recipe by looking online to find one that best fits your family.  If you do get bitten, put a drop of peppermint oil to soothe the spot.

The 5 C’s of Photo Styling | Kim Ludy and Mint

Hey!  I was cruising the Internet this morning and came across this great Blog post on Mint about Photo Styling.  In a nutshell, it gives the 5 C’s on Photo Styling:

1. Camera    2. Clarity    3. Composition and Crop    4. Color    5. Consistency

All 5 of these elements work together in creating the perfect photo to represent your shop, product(s) and your style.

So, if you have an online shop that you’re trying to get attention for, read this post, because it gives great tips in easy-to-follow steps.  Kim Ludy of Trampoline is the woman who is giving these tips.

Mesh Laundry Bags to the Rescue

mesh_laundry_bagOkay, so you know when you put your baby’s laundry in the washing machine in tact, but when you remove it, it looks like some sort of monster devoured it? Well it happens to the best of us.  There are many things that destroy perfectly good baby clothing; there are two main things in my opinion.  The first being the Heavy Duty Cycle.  Baby clothing needs to be washed on the Heavy Duty Cycle more often than not, so how do you keep it from stretching? The second being that retched VELCRO!!!  I mean, I love the stuff when it holds up pants or keeps shoes on, but I don’t like what it has to offer in the washing machine!  It latches onto everything and when you pull your laundry out, everything looks fuzzy and basically ruined.  Well, I’m sure your parents will remember those precious little Mesh Laundry Bags used to wash their “unmentionables,” and guess what,  Chickiedee has brought them back to save your baby clothing!  I know, it’s awesome!
