Humpday Tutorial | Handmade Soaps with 100 Layer Cake

I love the idea of having soaps made for special occations!  In fact, my mom makes handmade soaps and for my Bridal Shower last summer, she made a variety of natural soaps for all of my gals. They were a smash, because everyone loved the natural textures and scents!  So, when I found this tutorial, I instantly fell in love because it hit home for me.  I really wanted to share this from 100 Layer Cake (the giveaway has already passed, sorry) so you can make your own soaps at home!

Did You Know? | Earth Day

“Earth Day is the first completely international and universal holiday that the world has ever known.  Every other holiday was tied to one place, or some political or special event.  This day is tied to Earth itself, and to the place of Earth in the whole solar system.”

– Anthropologist Margaret Mead, 1977

buttons | what to do with them

blogpost-buttons

The clothing manufacturers are getting better at actually sewing the extra buttons into the clothing itself, but not all of them do it.  So, what do you do with the extra buttons?  They seem to scatter about the house and when you need one in particular, you can’t find it.  I decided to go around and gather all of the buttons I could find and put them in a cute little jar with a lid.  I know I have more buttons, I just need to find them!  From now on though, when I buy something with a loose-extra button, it’s going straight into the “Button Jar.”  Depending on the size of jar you choose, you can store it in your sock drawer, cupboard, a shelf, etc.  Be creative and use a funky little jar and it can double as decoration!  Not only will you stay organized, you’ll keep little buttons out of baby and pet mouths!

NOTE:  For all of you crafters out there, be sure to keep these buttons separate from your craft buttons.  You don’t want to use one of your extra clothing buttons on a project and not have it when you really need it!

sweetbeets | eco-letterpress stationery

I’m absolutely in LOVE with letterpress stationaery and wish I had the equiptment to do it myself.  Letterpress looks and feels great!  Sweetbeets is a great biz because they combine the art of letterpress with sustainability.  They print all of their cards on recycled paper.  The best thing of all… they’re handmade.  That’s right, no mass-produced items here.  Take a look at their site and maybe you’ll find something you like!

emergency doggie travel kit | road trip

blogpost_dogcarkit1-numbers4

blogpost_dogcarkit2-numbers4Ok, so my husband and I went on a small road trip last weekend to Fairplay, Colorado and we took our two Blue Heeler pups along for the ride.  Well, our youngest pup, Tucker Bean, gets car/motion sickness really bad.  I made sure not to feed him right before the trip and I purchased some Anxiety Reducer for Travel (I liked the kind in the tube vs. the tablet, Tucker just liked it off my finger and loved it!) from Petco thinking we would be okay.  All of a sudden Tucker starts drooling everywhere and pacing.  Then he begins to poo as he’s pacing!  My husband, Ron, had to pull over IMMEDIATELY without crashing.  We opened the back of our Jeep Liberty to find that Frankie Li, our 1 year old pup, had just stepped in her brother’s poo!  There we are on the side of the highway with a handful of tissues to clean the mess and nothing else!  We did the best we could and drove to a gas station so we could finish the cleanup and wash our hands. I ALWAYS have a bottle of hand sanitizer, but I switched purses and didn’t bring it along. When we opened the back of the Jeep again, we found that Tucker had vomited all over the back! Right then and there I said, “I’m creating a doggie car kit!”  This is what I put in mine:

  1. Doggie Toys to keep your pups busy on long trips like these Boots & Barkley from Target
  2. Lint Roller like this one from Scotch
  3. Hand Sanitizer I thought I’d try this spray kind from Target
  4. Tissues, paper towels (I like Viva because their super soft and absorbant), napkins
  5. Antibacterial wipes to clean your hands or the inside of your car
  6. Doggie bones for your pooch to nibble on like these ones from Pedigree
  7. Towels, wash cloths, or Chickiedee’s absorbant burp cloths (I use them for Tucker’s drooling in the car)
  8. Pet Carpet & Upholstery cleaner.  I like Odoban because it smells fabulous and you don’t have to wait 5 minutes before you wipe up the mess.  I purchased an empty travel spray bottle and filled it with the Odoban Carpet & Upholstery cleaner and added it to my kit.

Some other things in my doggie car kit are: doggie poo bags, plastic grocery sacks for trash and clean-up, puppy-potty mats to lay down wherever your pup is in the car, and a doggie water bowl with a water bottle of fresh water for your pup to drink.  All of this can be put into a small bag or box of any kind that you have laying around the house.

I hope that you will find this useful and never end up unprepares like we were!

DIY | Pet Pouches

I stumbled upon this blog post on the b-line this morning and thought that many of you would love it as much as I do!  It’s a DIY pet pouch that you can make and attach to your pups collar to hold things like your house key, a doggy-poo bag, etc. so you don’t have to carry it if you don’t have pockets.  I’m sure you can alter the size a tad to fit your lifestyle.  I don’t recommend ever putting a cell phone in a pouch around your dogs neck though.  It could be terrifying if it rang or vibrated while attached to them!  We don’t want our puppy-pals to be stressed out!  I think this is a fab project and it doesn’t seem to take much time at all. To make it a Green project, use some scrap fabric that you have laying around.  For example, an old t-shirt or old pair of funky PJ pants.
