Saving Energy | Cold vs. Hot Water

Cool Fact!  Every 10 degree drop in water temperature saves you about 3-5% on water heating costs!!!  Can you believe that?   So, try to wash your hands in cold water vs. hot/warm because it actually kills the same number of germs.  It’s the scrubbing that rids your hands of dirt and germs (plus a biodegradable soap).  Towels and sheets can be washed in warm water rather than hot to save energy.  If you’re up for the challenge, try taking a cold shower!  hee hee hee  Or shoot for a warm one at least!

Baby Tip 1 | Childish Diaper Bags Bringing Down Your Style?

Baby Tip 1: I understand that diaper bags are meant to carry baby’s junk around, but is baby carrying it, or mom & dad?  There are indeed tons of diaper bags out there that are designed with mom and dad in mind, but they can be expensive.  After baby grows up, you either hand it down or donate it, so why spend a ton?  Instead, moms you can use your fashionable oversized-purses that already go great with most of your outfits to tote baby’s junk around.  Dads, you can use that messenger bag or backpack that’s been hanging in the closet since college.  You save money and the bags already fit your style, so it’s a win-win situation.  Trust me, baby won’t mind one bit.  Just another way to save a buck.

If you have any tips to make mommy and daddy’s life easier or less expensive (especially in this economy), email them to us atcustomersupport (at) chickiedee (dot) com with the subject as: “Baby Tip.”  Provide your first name and last initial, along with your state of residence.  We’d love to post them!  Thanks!

Air Drying Your Laundry | Indoors and Out

I have been air drying many of my clothes for years.  I find that it not only saves energy (and money), but it makes my clothes last a lot longer and the colors stay bright.  You can dry your laundry inside or outside.  Sunlight is a natural disinfectant  and it will brighten your whites!  How cool is that!?!  With this said, you should dry your darks and colors in the shade or indoors to keep them from fading.

I love the Wall Shelf Drying Rack from Gaiam for indoor drying!  I really want to buy it.  You can put it in your laundry room and collapse it when not in use.  I like this one better than the floor racks, just because it’s off the floor and out of the way.

Gaiam Wall Shelf Drying RackFor outdoor drying, you can always rig up a temporary line if you don’t want one up all of the time or you can buy one of those retractable clothes lines.

Need to Recycle Old Computers and Office Equipment?

I came across this website http://epa.gov/epaoswer/hazwaste/recycle/ecycling/donate.htm and it tells you how you can recycle your old computers and office equipment.  It’s a terrible hazard to the environment to throw these things away, so definitely recycle them!

Also!  check out http://www.epa.gov/OCEPAterms for “Terms of Environment” which has a glossary of “green” terms, abbreviations, and acronyms!  We all know that we hear some terms and have no clue what they mean; here you can brush up on all of those terms and more!!!

Living Green with Diapers

So, we all understand that we should be green and sustainable, but when it comes to diapers it makes for a difficult decision for some.  Do we choose cloth or disposable?  One one hand cloth diapers save the landfill space, but the use more energy and water to wash and dry them.  Then the disposable diapers pile up in our landfills.  Well, there is indeed a third option!  G Diapers are flushable inserts with cotton covers.  These might be the solution for you.  Think about what works best for you and where you live.

The Immense Journey | Loren Eisley

I love this: “If there is magic on this planet, it is contained in water… Its substance reaches everywhere; it touches the past  and prepares the future; it moves under the poles and wanders thinly in the heights of air.  It can assume forms or exquisite perfection in a snowflake, or strip the living to a single shining bone cast up by the sea.”

– Loren Eisley, The Immense Journey

It’s so important to conserve our plants water.  With out it we could not live. We all should try to turn off the faucet when not in use, avoid watering the lawn at the hottest part of the day, make sure that we have a full load of laundry in the washer before turning it on, same goes for the dish washer, etc.  Water is valuable and we should treat it as such.
